| So the outer boot on the passenger side shaft of the '99 split open and the joint has begun to click like all hell, I'm wondering whether I can use a shaft out of a car with a 5-speed LSD to fix it?
So thats '99 open diff automatic CV busted, will an LSD 5-speed CV work to replace?

| The LSD and open diff axles are different on the differential side of the driver's axle. Passenger side axles are the same on open diff and LSD transmissions with both autos and 5-speeds, my issue is that I'm not sure if an axle from a 5-speed will work on an automatic transmission.
I have a spare set of 5-speed LSD axles, so I'm gonna see if it works tomorrow. I have a good feeling that it will.

| My good feeling was wrong.
Axles aren't the same, decided to disassemble, clean, and reboot the old axle. Made it all the way to tightening down the axle nut and found out I damaged the threads while bashing the outer joint back onto the axle. FUCK so frustrating!

| That sucks man. I did that once with one of my axles, i got one of the thread repair kits and managed to make it work for a while. | |

| You could probably get that axle for 60 bucks from the parts store. | |

| I know I could, but I had a boot and some grease already and thats cheaper. Its just... you get to that one last little step and realize you fucked yourself over an hour ago. The threads are only screwed up in one spot at the very beginning, grrrr....
I'll give O'Reilly's a call tomorrow and see if they have one on hand.

| Unfortunately I cannot. I have to have the car driveable before 4 PM tomorrow. If no where has an axle in stock I'll try to swap the outer joints between the auto and 5-speed axles. | |

| Success! It would appear that all outer joints between axles from cars with LSDs, Open Diffs, Autos, and 5-speeds are interchangeable. Also, I didn't actually damage the threads it seems, I managed to 'pancake' the end of the threaded portion of the outer joint instead! | |

| A short PSA about outer joints and how to hammer them on. DON'T DO THIS! Do this instead. | |

| Thought that was common sense? Some times you have to learn the hard way. I know i have done #1 a few too many times. | |

| LOL I used a metal hammer as well quite a while ago and damaged the first threads a bit like you were talking about. I managed to repair them and used the axle for a while until i tore it up at the drag strip. | |

| Harbor Frieght has super cheap rubber hammers/mallets. If you break it. Throw that shit away. Don't use hammer people. | |
