PostSubject: Connor's '92 SE-R   Connor's '92 SE-R EmptyMon Jan 18, 2010 12:51 am

So I bought a B13 yesterday for $900, I feel better about modifying this car as opposed to my SE-L as I don't care if I break shit with this! Laughing
I know that I'm at least the 5th owner, probably more like the 6th or 7th, and the car has had at least 5 different engines grace it's bay. It runs and drives fine, it doesn't have any electrical gremlins, has a JDM DE with ~100K on it, and a B13 LSD with ~150K, chassis has 216K and has been in Wisconsin for at least the last decade, if not it's entire life. This thing has blown engines, been broken into, got into accidents, and has had all sorts of bad luck in the past. I hope that streak doesn't continue! Here are all the mods that I know are done to the car...

-shorty intake
-megan racing headers
-megan racing catback and test pipe
-ACT six puck unsprung clutch
-lightened OE flywheel
-no AC
-no PS
-no ABS
-short shifter
-newer B13 seats
-Tsuru headlights (kinda junked)
-tokico blues (blown)
-eibach pro kits (very old)
-JVC deck (no speakers)
-plenty of rust (weight reduction)

That's how the trunk looked AFTER I had cleaned it up a bit, the drain plugs had been removed for a while and I think something had started living in there!

The bay looks so empty compared to my SE-L!

I'll spare you the gory details of the rust, it is pretty prevalent, but I believe it can be stopped! Overall, I'm very satisfied with the car, it has it's odd quirks, but for $900 I'm not complaining!

I've checked the last few for sale listings on the forums, and each time you and DJ were both trying to buy it! Laughing

BTW you find those headlights/corners/grill? If so I might swing by tomorrow.

My plan is to put this in it...

Connor's '92 SE-R 3766977274_418ba8006a

Along with a T25 setup, built tranny, CSKs with GC sleeves, fix as much of the rust as possible, and try my hand at a ghetto paint job.

I was wondering why you were interested in a pair of tubular a-arms for a B13. Nice car though, its nice to have a beater you dont have to worry about breaking. Let me know if you need any help with anything. Keep us updated as well.

I can't help myself with buying cars that are good deals. My gf says it's an addiction. Haha.

I'm sure I've got the lights and grill. I'll double check tonight when I get home and let you know. Tomorrow sounds good.

The list of mechanical/electrical problems I have found with the car...

-Blower only works on setting '4'
-OE idle system has been removed, in it's place there is a screw that holds open the TB
-Reverse doesn't always like to work
-No battery tie down
-Hood is loose due to smashed up rad support

The car is kind of a pain to drive right now, as it wants to die whenever you let off the throttle, but RPMs drop to ~100 and bounce around a bit and then stabilize at ~900. Cold starting is a bit of an issue as, once again, it wants to die, you just have to manually hold RPMs at ~1500 for a few minutes then it's fine. Another thing that kind of bothers me is the amount of sensor plugs that are just bundled behind things, not plugged in. I've found about 15 or so already.

After some professional consultation, this won't be the project car of my dreams. The rust is alot worse than I've been telling myself, and I would be stupid to invest 3-4 times the value of the car into the engine while the body rots away around it. Especially while I have a clean and 95% rust free alternative.

I think I'm just gonna clean it up a bit, replace some bits, make it run a bit smoother, and just drive it into the ground.

The cold start and idle issues are due to the cold weather and the IACV is missing. Once it warms up it will probably start and run a lot better. Rust is always a killer. Try to find a clean XE or E some where and go from there. Its not like you wont replace all of the SER items anyway.

Unfortunately I know exactly where I can get a '94 XE with a blown GA, and the body is in much better shape than this one. But I don't need three cars while I'm going to college and living at my parent's house.

The blower only working on high is due to a bad blower motor resistor.

I figured thats a common problem, considering GSpec has them listed as a normally stocked part on their website.

Reinstalled the IACV off of my other motor (drives much better now), the IACV that came in one of the boxes was stuck open and one of the sensor was smashed, so I guess instead of buying another one, he just stuck a screw in the TB

Wired in the '92 glass headlights today, found out that the area where the inner part of the headlight attaches was smashed in a bit when it got in an accident, so it doesn't fit perfect but it fits good enough.

Car hasn't started the last few days, fuel pressure is at zero and the pump doesn't turn on. The last owner wired the AC button as a pump kill switch as a "theft prevention device" for some reason, I'm doubtful of the wiring and I'd rather just remove the switch altogether. How do you remove the dash center section on an SE-R? I can strip down a B14 in a matter of minutes but I don't know where to begin on a B13!

Big hammer... By removing the screws... Removing the last piece that was put in...

No idea. Good luck with the wiring.

Got the interior torn apart today, I tracked down about 4 feet of wiring from that AC switch that had been tangled all over everything in the dash, and then it ran under the carpet and I gave up 'cause it was cold!

The car lives again! Fuel pump works again once I removed that kill switch, the wiring itself seemed fine so I think the problem was with the switch.

Today I bled the brakes, added a stock battery tray and tie down, and re-attached all the vacuum lines to discover a bad air regulator. When the hose to the air regulator was attached it would idle at ~2500 RPMs and blow large clouds of white smoke out the back, and when the hose was blocked off the smoke went away and idle was ~1000 RPMs.

Next up on the "To Do" list is to reinstall the Tsuru front on it (I found a good deal on a grill and corners, and managed to fix the headlights), put in the Sparco 4-point that was in the B14, and replace brakes (new rotors and pads, calipers from the SE-L).

And just so people don't say "oh you ruined a great OEM paintjob with spraypaint!" here are some close ups of what it was before.
